2022 Youth Grand Marshal

When Lisa at ShOut, part of Youth Work Ireland, came up with the idea of Youth Grand Marshal, we jumped the chance. The young people Lisa works with got together and chose Oran as their Youth Grand Marshal for Pride 2022 and we couldn’t be more proud of them or him.

Image shows a circular picture of Oran, the Youth Grand Marshal, with a lime green border around him,For me, Pride is important because it gives visibility to our community, growing up I hardly ever saw LGBT+ representation in Ireland, and the representation we had was usually a caricature of gay people, which often made me feel there was something wrong with me. Pride reassures thousands of young Irish LGBTQ+ people that they are not alone and not “the only one”. Being nominated as the Youth Grand Marshall is a huge honour, and I hope I can play a part in forwarding positive representation for the queer community.

Oran has been a positive light that shines bright in the shOUT LGBT+ Youth Project since he joined during the pandemic. He is friendly and calm, and has demonstrated great youth leadership qualities – always the first person to welcome a new member of the group, which may be a young person’s first time being in an LGBT+ space meeting other LGBT+ people. He does not speak for all LGBT+ young people but advocates for them and ensures that all voices are heard. He is passionate that all LGBT+ young people have a space that they can be themselves to thrive in, fighting for the rights of his Trans peers. Oran represented LGBT+ young people at the Youth Advisory Committee, European Solidarity Corps funded seminar, ‘Why Youth Work Works’. He was interviewed by 2FM during ‘Stand Up Week’ and continues to represent LGBT+ young people in Galway. We at shOUT LGBT+ Youth Project and Youth Work Ireland Galway are excited to see what the future holds for Oran and delighted that he has been nominated for the role of Galway Pride’s Youth Grand Marshal 2022.
